Impact: showing vs. making
I want to make a difference. I want to change things. I want to have an impact.
My personal website lays it out loud and clear: Write. Speak. Create. Inspire.
Sometimes, though, creating content is more about showing a difference than making a difference.
Take World Vision, for example. I manage the social media for the UK office of the world’s biggest international children’s charity, but I’m not deluded enough to think that a blog post that I write or photo that I share will change the world.
What I can do, though, is help all of our supporters understand the difference they are making.
By showing the progress our communities are making – the changes that are being made across the world – I can demonstrate how the money you spend as a supporter makes a real difference to the world.
If you can keep perspective on the impact of the content you create, and recognise when showing is better than making, you’ll start your fans and followers on a journey that they don’t ever want to finish.
